Telwatta Camp Fire

In August 2005 A.R.C travelled back to Sri Lanka to sort out legal documents for the new orphanage, it was then we received news of a big fire that had been caused by the storm during the night. We were taken to the site of the fire and were horrified to find 18 Tsunami shelter homes totally destroyed some of the buildings were still in flames and all still smouldering.
A.R.C immediately linked up with other charities and held a meeting to see how we could all help. A.R.C being a children’s charity offered to look after the 63 children that had been left homeless and the only belongings they had were what they stood in, they had lost everything. The first thing was to give the children something to eat as they had been up all night and then try to get some more clothing for them. A.R.C called Judy Moore from Guernsey St John Ambulance who was actually working in Colombo at the time. Judy gave over 20 boxes of clothing which she had in a store in Colombo. A.R.C then called Ben Remphrey who also had a team over in Colombo from Mines Awareness (all these are Guernsey based charities) It was agreed that M.A.T. would pick these boxes up from St John Ambulance in Colombo and bring them down South to Telwatta for A.R.C to distribute to the children. It was amazing how everyone rallied around to help.

Distribution Time

It was then that A.R.C met a lovely lady called Deepika who lives in Hikkaduwa, she seemed to have bonded really well with the children and kept them under control with her help the distribution of clothes went really well. She then informed us that the children would not be allowed to go back to school unless they had school uniforms. A.R.C agreed to phone home and ask ‘Ladies College’ if they would help to raise money by doing a mofty day to purchase the new uniforms. They agreed and A.R.C went out immediately to get two sets of uniforms for each child, these were all hand made within two days. It was great to get the children back in school and just in time for them to sit their exams.

A.R.C also bought books and pens for the children’s school work together with some toys for the children to play with at home. Within a few hours all the families were moved into another batch of sheltered homes and A.R.C. continued to help out by joining other charities distribute food, for the next week until everyone had settled into their new sheltered homes.
